Breakdown by Groups (Texas Hold'em Specific)

Playing against Tight and/or Consistent players? RealPokerOdds™'s Group Breakdown gives you the advantage.

The following is the golden rule of poker:

"Play your opponent, not your cards."

Each poker player has their own tendancies, and if you can figure out theirs before they notice yours, you have a decided advantage. If they are too aggressive, you can trap them. If they are too timid, you can bully pots away from them.

Some players, whether they are new to the game or are ignoring the golden rule, play their cards, regardless of their opponents or their position on the table. Players who only play the best hands are considered "tight" players. Newer players tend to show the strenght of their hand by their bets; a marginal hand merits a call, a good hand merits a raise, and great hands invoke the infamous "All-In". When you encounter these types of players, RealPokerOdds™'s Group Breakdown is a wonderful tool.

RealPokerOdds™'s Group Breakdown allows you to define up to 6 groups, each have one or more type of hand. Once the flop is dealt, RealPokerOdds™ compares your hand against every type of hand within each group, and gives an overall percentage chance of victory.

The best way to explain this is with an example. Assume you have the following hand:

The player before you, who you have been watching for the last half-hour doubles the blinds. This player has been very consistent in his betting, and you guess he has two face cards, maybe even a pair of a jacks or tens. With anything higher he would have bet a larger amount, and with a small pocket pair, he would have just called the blind. After calling the bet, the flop comes:

Now, assuming the assumptions above are correct, that's a very favorable flop. Using basic settings, RealPokerOdds™ gives a 1 pair Strength percentage of 66.8%, which means roughly 2 out of every three hands you are the favorite. But that analysis is based on general assumptions, and you think you have a better feel for your opponents hand. Which is where the Group Breakdown comes in.

This is what the Group Breakdown window looks like for the above situation:

The breakdown shows that if you were up against pocket Aces, Kings, or Queens, you would be in serious trouble. However, you think your opponent doesn't have that strong of a hand. If your opponent is holding a pair of Jacks or Tens, then you have a 91.2% of winning. If your opponent is holding Big Slick (an Ace and a King), then you only have a 84.9% of winning, still making you an overwhelming favorite. The same is true for the other groups, which shows you that if your assumptions are correct, then you are decidedly in the driver's seat.

Customized Groups

The real beauty of the Group Breakdown is that you decide what hands belong to what groups. You can have as many sets of groups as you like. When you first install RealPokerOdds™, you get two default groups. You can change these groups, delete them, and/or add new groups to suit your preferences. RealPokerOdds™ has a wizard that steers you through the Group creation process. The image below shows how the groups in the sample above were created.

I didn't believe the numbers until I saw how many different ways there were to get a Flush.
